Great Swamp Sanctuary
Site Plan
Upon entering the grounds of the Great Swamp Sanctuary, visitors will immediately feel they are a part of this magnificent natural setting. Great care has been taken to preserve the intimacy of the woodlands surrounding the Discovery Center. Parking is being located on an old excavation site adjacent to the Great Swamp with a one-way loop connecting to the exit road. The environmentally sensitive design, featuring parking spaces positioned between trees, embraces the landscape architects’ philosophy that “the land comes first.” Larger vehicles, such as buses and RVs, will use a secondary parking area just a short walk from the bus drop-off near the entrance to the center. As many trees as possible will be saved around the building, allowing visitors to experience a true native plantscape. A raised boardwalk at the rear of the center will provide a walkway into the ethereal dark water swamp stained black by the tannins from decades of fallen tupelo and cypress leaves.
